Why was The Hills interesting?

Some one please explain. I know it's the show that got things started
for Lauren Conrad and Audrina Patridge and others. The two are
attractive but what else was interesting about the show. Did boys and
men watch the show or was it just for girls and women. The reason I
ask is I don't understand what Lauren Conrad and Audrina Patridge do
for a living. I saw Audrina on Dancing with the Stars and enjoyed her
dancing and how they showed off her body. Does anyone remember the
DWTS episode where she was spitting out the onion she bit into. That
was amusing in a sexual way.
